On February 22, the Cyprus Government supported a joint statement by EU foreign ministers expressing the view that PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan should have an open and fair trial before an independent court and in the presence of lawyers chosen by him and international observers. In a written statement, Government Spokesman Khristos Stilianidhis stressed that the EU objection to the death penalty was very important. Equally important is that it should be pointed out to Turkey that it should solve its own problems by political means and with full respect for human rights and the application of justice in line with its commitments as a Council of Europe member.
