On February 8, Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, the Vatican ambassador to the United States, sent a letter to California Governor Gray Davis to appeal for clemency for Thai citizen Jaturun Siripongs. "Committed to upholding the sacredness and dignity of each human life, the Holy Father prays that the life of Mr Siripongs may be saved through the compassion and magnanimity of yourself and the Board of Pardons and Paroles," the letter said.
