On February 9, Johnson Kamya Wavamunno, Semei Mwesigwa Bonde and Private Paddy Baryeijuka, were sentenced to death for murder and robbery of US$240,000, the property of Barclays Bank, on February 29,1996. High Court Judge Lady Justice Constance Kategaya Byamugisha sentenced the 3 to death after finding them guilty of both offenses. Wavamunno's lawyers were to appeal the sentence. The courtroom was filled with the convicts' relatives and friends who walked out in a low mood. The 3 defendants were represented by Kampala Advocates, Francis Kabyesiza, Nsubuga Mubiru and MacDosman Kabega. The court heard that Wavamunno paid US$10,000 of the stolen dollars to the Deputy Third Prime Minister, Paul Etiang, as part of US$20,000 he owed him. Wavamunno had fled to Germany, and later to Kenya, a few days after the robbery, as the police were closing in on him.
