On January 25, Justice Wesley James dismissed Patrick Taylor's and Anthony McLeod's summonses complaining about the inhumane conditions in which they are being kept in prison. Justice W. James said that they have no arguable case. They were scheduled to be hanged on January 26. The High Court delayed Patrick Taylor's and Anthony McLeod's hangings, postponing the execution for 4 days. During a 5-hour hearing, attorneys for the 2 convicted murderers argued the executions should be stayed to allow them to prepare an appeal. The lawyers said they intended to appeal to Jamaica's Constitutional Court on the grounds that the human rights of McLeod and Taylor were violated because they were held in bad prison conditions. Jack Hines, one of the attorneys who appeared on behalf of Taylor and McLeod, said on local radio after the stay was granted that the 2 men felt "as much relief as 4 days can give you."
