On July 28, on Col. Gaddafi's orders, revolutionary committee members took Wafi Muhammad Anbih out of Abi Salim prison in Tripoli, and publicly executed him in a square in Bani Walid. They refused to hand over his body to his family for burial. Anbih was Libya's former ambassador to Chad, prior to which he was head of the confidential affairs office at the Foreign Ministry, then head of the Chad desk at the General Staff Presidency. He was arrested in the middle of October 1993 as part of large-scale arrests carried out by the regime following its discovery of the preparations for what was called the October uprising. Anbih was subjected, along with other prisoners, to the most brutal types of torture at the hands of the regime's lackeys. Even though the military court that tried those arrested in 1995 and 1996 did not hesitate in passing unjust capital sentences against 8 of them (carried out on January 2, 1997), it only condemned Anbih to a prison term. It is not known whether he was retried or if another sentence was passed against him.
