On March 1, Federal Alliance leader Louis Luyt said the upcoming general election was a referendum on the death penalty. He said opinion polls had shown that about 80% of South Africa wanted capital punishment to be reinstated. Only the African National Congress and the Democratic Party were opposed to the idea. "The will of the majority should prevail, and the coming election offers an opportunity for that to happen." Luyt said a vote for his party would amount to an expression of disgust with the crime rate, and would be a demand for the death penalty to be reinstated.
