On February 4, South African opposition parties called for the reintroduction of the death penalty following the shooting of Daewoo executive Y.K. Kwon in an affluent Johannesburg suburb the day before. "There is a real need for the introduction of the death penalty. By this time tomorrow morning there will be a least 61 more murders... There is a slaughter going on. It has to stop," said Piet Matthee, the opposition New National Party's spokesman on safety and security issues. Also the Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) renewed its call for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to hold a national referendum on bringing back the death penalty, scrapped two years before. The ANC says it will not restore the death penalty which it sees as a barbarous tool of apartheid that would not act as a deterrent.
