On March 17, convicted killer Andrew Kokoraleis was put to death by lethal injection, just hours after Gov. George Ryan denied requests for clemency. Kokoraleis died within minutes after a fatal combination of drugs was injected into his arms. He stared at the ceiling and his lips moved quietly. After two deep breaths, his lips stopped moving. It was the only execution in Illinois in 1999.
