On May 7, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides on behalf of Cyprus signed Protocol No. 6 to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, concerning the abolition of the death penalty on the occasion of the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Europe's Committee of Foreign Ministers held in Budapest.
Council of Europe Secretary-General Daniel Tarschys said that the decision of Cyprus to sign Protocol No. 6 "confirms the consolidation of Europe as a death-penalty free continent, showing the way also for other Member States of our organization which have not yet signed or ratified this Protocol."
