On November 23, the Ras Al Khaimah Appeal Court commuted the death sentence handed down to Mohammed Rashid, a national, for raping an 11-year-old Syrian girl, to 10 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay UD60,000 in compensation. Rashid appealed against the death sentence and then made the offer to the girl's parents. The court rejected the lower Shari'a court's verdict because it said the girl's parents had contributed to the offense by allowing her to be seen in public while wearing revealing clothing.
