On October 15, Ye Cheng-jian, 38, and two mainland accomplices, He Jingsheng and Li Xinwen, members of a Hong Kong gang, were sentenced to death by the Zhuhai Municipal Intermediate People's Court for murder, robbery, kidnapping and firearms offenses carried out in Guangdong and Macao since 1994. Thirteen other accomplices, including two Hong Kong men, were given sentences ranging from one year to a suspended death penalty. The three men's appeals against the death sentences were rejected by the Guangdong Provincial Higher People's Court on November 5. The Guangdong court's decision was upheld by Beijing's Supreme People's Court on November 23.
