One person was sentenced to death and another to long-term imprisonment for fraud using value-added tax (VAT) invoices valued at 400m yuan, by a court in Shanwei, south China's Guangdong Province.
Huang Hongkai and his brother Huang Hongyong wrote 306 false VAT invoices worth 400m yuan from May 1997 to September 1999 in the name of four companies, which involved more than 400 million yuan in tax payment and led to losses of 33.85m yuan in tax revenue. They got 839,400 yuan of illegal income as " commission."
Huang Hongkai was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. His brother was given a 15-year imprisonment and fined 100,000 yuan.
