Osama bin Laden would be handed to the Americans if he was captured alive in Afghanistan, Downing Street revealed.
Senior officials said the terrorist warlord would be given to the U.S. authorities regardless of whether he faced execution.
The Prime Minister's official spokesman said that in the "unlikely" event of Bin Laden being captured alive by British forces, there would be no question of not giving him up. The comments contradicted those of Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon, who earlier said that Britain would only hand him over if America gave assurances that he would not face the death penalty.
Hoon said that this was because Britain is tied to the European Convention on Human Rights, which prevents it handing suspects over to countries if they faced execution.
But the spokesman said that this would not be the case if Bin Laden was captured on foreign soil.
