Over 100 suspected bandits have been summarily executed by Burkina Faso's security forces during a three-month clamp down on crime, a human rights group in the West African country said.
The former French colony's government has led a campaign in recent months to combat rising crime, in particular armed robbery, but has declined to give details of its operations.
Chrysogone Zougmore, secretary general of the Burkina Movement for Human and Peoples' Rights (MBDHP), said his organisation had documented 106 extra-judicial executions between October 15, 2001 and January 15, 2002.
"This is really revolting and it is unacceptable," Zougmore said. "We must stop such massacres."
"These bodies are thrown to vultures and to stray dogs, and we believe those who order and carry out these executions are as unlawful as the bandits they kill," he added.
Members of President Blaise Compaore's government could not be reached for comment.
