PAKISTAN: AHRC FOR CRACKING DOWN ON JIRGA COURTS

the Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission said the Pakistan Government must crack down hard on Jirga courts and the extra-judicial murders they commit. Quoting certain incidents that took place in Sindh including murder of a girl in Khairpur district, who was mauled by a pack of dogs and then shot, the AHRC said in a statement that the majority of more barbaric human rights violations in Pakistan can be traced to the Jirga, court-like gatherings of tribal men which have been declared illegal by the superior courts of the country. AHRC suggested that an independent monitoring body needs to be established, funded and given free reign.
