PAKISTAN. SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCE OF THREE CONVICTS

a two-member bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of three convicts convicted of killing five people in Jhang district in 1995. It was reported that one Ghulam Shabbir kidnapped Ejaz Bibi, wife of Ghulam Abbas in 1995. The kidnapped woman later gave birth to two children, Waqar Shabbir and Nisa Shabbir. A case was registered against Ghulam Shabbir under Hudood Laws, however he was granted bail. Meanwhile, Ghulam Abbas demanded that his wife Ejaz Bibi be handed over to him. But Ghulam Shabbir refused with the contention that he had married her and also that he had had two children from her. On October 16, 1995 Ghulam Abbas together with Khaliq Dad, Fazal Dad, Fazal Elahi and M Jehangir killed Ghulam Shabbir, his father Namdar, Ejaz Bibi and the two children, one year old Waqar Shabbir and three year old Nisa Shabbir. A District and Sessions court had awarded death sentence to all the accused, however acquitted M Jehangir. Later Lahore High Court acquitted Fazal Elahi, however upheld the death sentences of three others.
