Pakistani police said they had arrested two more men accused of gang-raping a woman on the orders of a village jury, bringing to four the total held so far, but a fifth suspect was still at large.
"One alleged rapist is missing. Our teams are hunting him," police official Farmal Ali told Reuters by telephone from Muzaffargarh district in southern Punjab. "We hope to arrest him very soon."
The case has caused a sensation in Pakistan after a traditional village jury, or panchayat, ordered the rape as punishment for the woman's brother allegedly having an affair with a girl from a higher-caste tribe.
Traditional law exists side-by-side with Islamic and civil law in Pakistan, sometimes uneasily.
The panchayat of local notables allegedly ordered the gang-rape of Mukhtaran Mai, a 30-year-old divorcee, in Meerwala Jatoi village on June 22. Some members of the jury have also been detained by police for questioning.
The rape sparked a national outcry. The Supreme Court summoned the provincial police chief to explain the incident after newspapers reported that hundreds of people, too frightened to challenge the jury's verdict, watched four men take turns to rape Mai inside a farmhouse and then force her to walk home naked.
