Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has delayed by 30 days the execution of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian convicted of conducting blasts that killed four people in Lahore in 1990.
“The president delayed Singh’s execution, scheduled for April 1, after the Indian government and the convict’s family pleaded him for mercy,” Foreign Office spokesman Muhammad Sadiq said. In New Delhi, parliament members cutting across party lines cheered Musharraf’s decision by thumping their desks in the lower house, as the Indian government said it would not give up efforts to save Sarabjit from the gallows. “The (Indian) government has just received a communication from the Indian embassy in Islamabad regarding this decision,” Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said amid loud cheers in the parliament.
