Palestinian gunmen stormed into a Palestinian military court in the northern West Bank city of Jenin and shot dead three Palestinians who had just been convicted in the killing of a security officer, witnesses and security sources said.
The shooting occurred shortly after two of the three men, Jihad and Khaled Kmail, both 17 years old, were sentenced to death and the third Mahmoud Kmail, 30, was sentenced to 15 years hard labour for Osama Kmeil's killing on February 1.
Judge Ahmad Mubaied, however ruled that neither condemned man could be executed, since neither was then 18. He reduced their sentences to 15 years each. When word of that outcome reached the crowd, it surged against the police officers, witnesses said.
Hundreds of Palestinians including several masked gunmen burst into the courtroom after a heavy police presence failed to hold them back.
The gunmen then opened fire at the three who had just been convicted of killing Kmeil. The security officer had been involved in the killing of Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israel in the past.
The killing of Kmeil and the shooting in a Jenin courtroom appeared to be part of a cycle of revenge killings carried out by relatives of the dead. Witnesses said many of those who stormed the courtroom were Kmeil's relatives.
