Papua New Guinea's first court martial convened to hear mutiny-related charges arising from the Moem Barracks soldiers uprising in Wewak earlier in 2002.
Up to 38 soldiers, ranking from corporal to private were to appear before Defence Force Judge Gibbs Salika at the Wewak courthouse for indictment.
The Moem Barracks incident involved an uprising by soldiers who broke into armouries and armed themselves, burnt down two buildings and kept the barracks under siege for several weeks in which they made certain demands to the Government, principally on the retrenchment exercise.
The maximum penalty for mutiny is the death sentence under military regulations.
