People sentenced for any criminal offence would be able to petition a court for a DNA analysis if there is reasonable probability the evidence would clear them or shorten their sentences, under legislation approved by a Senate panel. The measure would cost the state up to $200,000 the 1st year and less than $100,000 each subsequent year. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Steve Cohen, D-Memphis, moved out of the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously.
