Stanley “Tookie” Williams
United States · 1981-2005 · The case in the archive
Co-founder of one of the Los Angeles gangs, he was sentenced to death in California in 1981 for four murders committed in 1979. In prison he wrote children's books against the gangs and was put forward more than once for the Nobel Peace Prize.
He always maintained his innocence, and that was the very reason the governor gave for refusing him clemency on 12 December 2005. He was executed the next day at San Quentin. In Italy actors and directors had signed an appeal to save him.
