Peter Barandy, Justice Minister Designate by the parliament's Constitutional Affairs Committee, said he was against the death penalty and he considered this morning's radio statement by [outgoing Prime Minister] Viktor Orban astoundingly irresponsible.
The outgoing prime minister said that Hungary had reached a point at which it had to say yes to death penalty, that the introduction of death penalty had to be seriously considered.
Peter Barandy said it was fortunate that Viktor Orban said this as an outgoing prime minister and not as a fully authoritative prime minister, because in the latter case, he would have made Hungary's EU accession doubtful.
