Philippine President Gloria Arroyo ordered an offensive against the country's top smugglers and said they would be charged with economic sabotage, punishable by death.
The move would complement the government's determination to address law and order problems as well as corruption.
'Just like kidnapping, we are not going to resolve it crime by crime but criminal by criminal,' she said, referring to smuggling.
A list with the names of the country's top smugglers had already been provided to her, she said at an anti-smuggling summit, though she refused to reveal their identities.
However, unlike smugglers, tax evaders do not deserve death penalty, Arroyo said.
