Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo favoured the lifting of the ban on the imposition of the death penalty for convicted kidnappers and drug lords, the presidential palace said.
Arroyo was open to the idea of imposing the death penalty for convicted kidnappers and drug lords, Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said.
Bunye explained that there was growing public clamour for the president to lift the indefinite moratorium on executions through lethal injection.
"I must emphasise that the death penalty is not the end-all to heinous crime.
The entire criminal justice system involving the police, the prosecution, the courts, the correctional system and community must be able to team up to prevent, deter and solve heinous crimes," Arroyo was reported as saying.
