Police in Indonesia's easternmost province detained pro-independence Papuan Presidium Council Chairman Theys Hiyo Eluay, his secretary general Thaha al-Hamid, Don Flassy, the man behind the concept of Papuan independence, and former political prisoner John Mambor on suspicion of illegal separatist activities. Police also planned to detain Beanal and the Reverend Herman Awom.
Under Indonesia's Criminal Code, those found guilty of separatist activities can be given the death penalty.
