Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski appealed to the Nigerian president to commute the death sentence of Safiya Hussaini Tungar-Tudu.
Safiya was convicted of having a child out of wedlock by an Islamic court in Nigeria in October 2001 and sentenced to be stoned to death while buried up to her waist in sand.
In his letter the Polish president asked his Nigerian counterpart Olusegun Obasanjo for clemency for Safiya.
"I am asking you Mr President for clemency for the convicted woman. Let the Nigerian constitution protect her as it ensures the right to life to everyone. Let her children be protected against orphanhood by the Convention of Child's Rights which reminds us of the necessity of special care and help for the youngest," the Polish president wrote.
