Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, a vocal supporter of the US-led invasion of Iraq, said he opposed the death penalty for Saddam Hussein even though the Iraqi leader had committed "heinous crimes". "My personal opinion, which I know is not shared by everyone, like the US for example, is that under no circumstances should the death penalty be applied," he said in a live interview with Portuguese cable news channel SIC Noticias. "Despite (his) having committed heinous crimes, I feel repugnance for the death penalty," he added. US President George W. Bush had said Saddam should face "the ultimate penalty" shortly after the Iraqi leader was found on December 14, 2003 in a hole under a mud hut near his home town of Tikrit in northern Iraq.
