President Leonid Kuchma signed the Criminal Code that was recently approved by Parliament, thus ensuring that it will come into force. The new Criminal Code, effective from June 1, replaces the death penalty with life sentences, introduces life terms for particularly severe crimes, reduces the prison sentences for practically all crimes and provides the option of fine as punishment for many crimes.
