Prime Minister John Howard backed executing Osama bin Laden if he were captured and convicted.
As he prepared to announce details of the Australian deployment in the Middle East within days, Howard said the terrorist suspect would face death if tried in the United States.
When asked if he supported such a penalty, Howard replied: "Yes, I do."
Not normally a supporter of capital punishment, Howard said bin Laden was a special case. "I think these are different circumstances, I really do."
