Relatives of Ivory Coast's former junta leader Robert Guei and his wife Rose said that they had been executed by security forces and not in a shootout as was reported on state television. "They executed him at his house. He was having lunch with his wife. By the time we telephoned to tell him he should get out of there, it was already too late," one family source said from hiding. Other family members said some of Guei's aides had been able to telephone friends to tell them what was about to happen, before they too were executed. National television showed pictures of Guei's body lying face up in the undergrowth. Although it said he was killed in an exchange of fire, his only evident wound was a single gunshot to the right side of the head. Guei had recently broken with the government accusing it of mismanagement and of arbitrarily arresting soldiers and civilians.
