Robert Conyers, on death row since 1994, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole under a ruling by the US Supreme Court on crimes committed by juveniles. Circuit Judge Howard King handed down the new sentence in Sumter.
28-year-old Conyers was 14 when 2-year-old Kimberly Dawn Sims was beaten to death in 1991. Conyers had been sentenced to die in 1994 after pleading guilty to the death of the girl.
