Russia is ready to cooperate in the search for and punishment of international terrorists, Dmitry Kozak, deputy head of the presidential administration said in Washington, where he was holding meetings with the US Congress and Supreme Court.
Kozak acknowledged the political risk in the Russian administration's statements of political support for US military action, as a considerable part of Russia's population is still under the influence of Cold War-era stereotypes.
"We risk losing some part of the leftist electorate, and also part of the Muslim population of Russia," Kozak said.
However President Putin has already taken unpopular decisions in the past "because he felt that he was right" Kozak said.
"This was the case with the decision to ban the death penalty. The Russian administration took that step while realizing that 70-80% of the population categorically opposed the ban on the death penalty in the country," Kozak said.
