The 24th conference of European Justice Ministers opened in Moscow.
"Making Moscow the venue of the conference is Russia's signal of its determination to continue legal reforms and fulfil the obligations assumed at its joining the Council of Europe," said Hans-Christian Krueger, deputy general-secretary of the Council of Europe (CU).
However, the 6th protocol of the European Convention on Human Rights concerning the abolition of the death penalty had still not been ratified. Although Russia is observing a moratorium on the death penalty, Kruger said he viewed the ratification of the protocol as very important and hoped this will be done in the near future.
The fight against terrorism was one of the main items on the agenda.
