Rwanda's justice minister said that a Rwandan court sentenced nine ethnic Hutus to death at a mass trial for more than 100 suspects accused of involvement in the country's 1994 genocide. Judges took more than two hours to read the verdicts in a makeshift courtroom of wooden pillars and plastic sheets, erected to accommodate the large group of accused at Rilima prison, about 50 km (30 miles) south of Kigali. "The victims were cut into pieces," the judges said. "They were tortured to death with clubs, machetes, swords, iron bars. "One victim had to dig her own grave, her executioners forced her to lie down in it to measure her size until they had found the desired dimensions. She was buried alive."
