Italians voted ‘Nessuno tocchi Caino’ – an anti death penalty song- into second place in the preliminary round of Italy’s biggest music contest yesterday.
The song, by Enrico Ruggeri and Andrea Miro, is a dialogue between an executioner and a death row inmate in the run-up to execution and was aired in public for the first time at the Sanremo festival yesterday.
The video accompanying the song, directed by controversial photographer Oliviero Toscani, was presented to the media in the northern Italian town of San Remo this morning. Present at the launch with Ruggeri, Miro and Toscani were HOC General Secretary Sergio D’Elia and Leroy
Orange, who was released from Illinois’ death row last January when former Governor George Ryan gave him a pardon based on innocence.
Orange had been featured in Toscani’s 2000 “We, on Death Row” campaign on US inmates.
