Saudi Arabia sentenced some of the men it arrested in the 1996 bombing of a U.S. Air Force housing facility that killed 19 U.S. servicemen and injured hundreds, the deputy interior minister was quoted today as saying.
Prince Ahmed ibn Abdulaziz did not specify how many people were sentenced or what penalties were imposed. The verdicts "must be announced at the right time," the deputy interior minister said in an interview with the al-Jazirah newspaper.
Prince Ahmed, the brother of King Fahd, said the bombing suspects had been sentenced under Islamic law. He said the sentences still required approval by the supreme justice council and the king.
Saudi Arabia imposes the death penalty for murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking.
