Sharif Kadir, a 56-year-old jobless man sentenced to death for drug trafficking, escaped the gallows when the Court of Appeal allowed his appeal. Sharif had been sentenced to death by the Alor Star High Court on July 24, 1997, for trafficking in 12.79kg of cannabis in Kampung Sungei Derhaka, on Feb 22, 1995.
