Sister Helen Prejean, the nun who inspired the Hollywood film Dead Man Walking, said she believed Kenny Richey, the Scot on death row, should be released. In January, Mr Richey's conviction for killing a two year-old girl in a fire in the United States was overturned after he spent nearly 18 years waiting for execution.
Prejean told BBC Radio Scotland's Sunday Live programme: "The people who withheld evidence or who distorted evidence should be held accountable.
"The state ought to recompense people with whom they make mistakes and cost them 18 years of their lives.
"How can you really compensate somebody who has been tortured?
"Do you say sorry, issue an apology - money won't do it either. But at least it would be a good face to just say 'we made a mistake'.
"However, they are not going to do that for the very same reason that the prosecutors in the state are not going to admit that they got it wrong."
Mr Richey, who has maintained his innocence, was convicted of killing Cynthia Collins, who died in a 1986 fire at her mother's apartment in the north-west Ohio town of Columbus Grove. Prosecutors said Mr Richey intended to kill his ex-girlfriend, but ended up killing the child.
