Slalhuddin Tipu and Abdul Jabber Labu were sentenced to death and five others were awarded life imprisonment by a speedy trial tribunal in Chittagong, Banlgadesh, for the murder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Kamaluddin. Labu was convicted in absentia, both men were members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the BNP. According to the prosecution, Kamaluddin, district BNP leader and Secretary of the Rickshaw Shramik Union of Laxmipur was beaten and stabbed at the union office on August 31, 2000. He died from his injuries in hospital on September 2 of the same year.
