South Africa was one of three African countries that co-sponsored the resolution at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to universally abolish the death penalty. South Africa called for a moratorium on executions with a view to completely abolish the death penalty at the commission's annual session in Geneva. The resolution was co-sponsored by Angola and Cape Verde.
