South Dakota should continue to allow the death penalty to be imposed for some horrible crimes, the state Senate decided. SB207, which failed on a vote of 8-27, would have eliminated the death penalty. Sen. Dan Sutton, D-Flandreau, is the sponsor of the measure. The bill would have commuted the sentences of the 4 people who are currently on death row. They would instead been sentenced to life. Yesterday, the bill had narrowly passed (4-3) the Senate Judiciary Committee.
