Spain opposes the death penalty for Saddam Hussein, but wants to see "a just sentence" meted out to the former Iraqi dictator, Spanish Justice Minister Jose Maria Michavila said. Michavila said the deposed leader should receive "a just sentence with all guarantees (of his rights to a fair trial) and without any possibility of impunity - but avoiding the death penalty." Michavila was speaking to journalists the day after US President George W. Bush insisted that Saddam should face "the ultimate penalty" following his capture.
