Speaking in relation to Le My Linh, an Australian sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said that the federal government had no sympathy for drug traffickers but was equally firm in its opposition to the death penalty. "We have no sympathy for drug traffickers, But we do not support capital punishment. We have approached the Vietnamese government and explained to them that the Australian government doesn't support capital punishment. We don't want to see this Australian citizen executed and we will continue to make representations to the Vietnamese making our views clear on the penalty," Mr Downer told reporters.
