Supreme Court justice nominee Kim Young-ran said she believed capital punishment must be abolished in South Korea, during a time when the nation was debating the use of the controversial sentence. 
In replying to the National Assembly's written questions to review her nomination, Kim said, "As judges are also humans, we try really hard to avoid sentencing the death penalty that deprives a human of his life. When we are forced to do so, we go through an immense agony."
Kim, however, added that a decision whether to abolish or keep capital punishment should be reached with a consensus from the public. "People's level of understanding the law, the crime rate and other criminal policies should be reviewed thoroughly," she said.
