the abolition of death penalty is Taiwan's ultimate goal and can only be realised after it receives the support of a majority of local people, Vice Minister of Justice Chen Shou-huang said. At present, Chen said, nearly 80 percent of Taiwanese people, as reported from numerous public opinion polls, are still opposed to abolishing death penalty. "Since the death penalty remains valid under our legal system, we must execute inmates in accordance with legal provisions and cannot violate any final court ruling," Chen said.
