Terrorism expert Paul Buchanan said that International criminals will consider taking refuge in New Zealand because of a law that prevents the deportation of anyone who faces the death penalty in their home country, according to an editorial in The Australian. The warning was sparked by the case of Ahmed Zaoui, an Islamic fundamentalist sentenced to death in Algeria for his alleged links to terrorist groups. Zaoui flew into Auckland on December 6, introduced himself to immigration officers as an international fugitive and said he wanted to seek asylum. Buchanan, an international relations expert at Auckland University and a former US government adviser, said the case could set a precedent. "Every person who has been sentenced to death in another country knows that if they come to New Zealand they will be safe".
