The People's Deputy party, reorganized and renamed as the People's Party of the Russian Federation, expressed support for President Vladimir Putin's efforts to unite the country at a party conference. However, when speaking on the subject of law and order, party leader Gennadiy Raykov called for stronger government measures.
"A criminal, no matter what he is, a mechanic or a minister, must be in prison. The severest forms of punishment, up to the death penalty, must be applied to the more dangerous criminals. We respect the president's position on the issue of the non-use of the death penalty but we urge him to change it. This is the demand of the majority of our citizens," Raykov said.
