The Anti-Taleban North Alliance accused the Taleban Islamic Movement of executing 198 supporters of the Alliance who had been captured during the conflict. A spokesman for Ahmad Shah Masood, the anti-Taleban leader, said that the victims had been taken from prisons in Shibirgan, Mazar-i-Sharif and Samanghan, in northern Afghanistan. They were shot dead and buried in a common grave. Masood's spokesman said that the 198 prisoners, ethnic Hazareans and Uzbeks, had been killed because the Taleban did not want to fulfil the agreement on the exchange of prisoners reached at a meeting held under the aegis of the Islamic Conference in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. The Taleban movement denied this accusation.
