The Bishops' Conference of Lithuania (the leading body of the Roman Catholic Church in Lithuania) issued a pastoral letter on the occasion of the Day of Life, which Catholics celebrate on the last Sunday of April. The letter stated, "We can only regret that a society is being formed where murderers and major criminals are legally protected from the death penalty while innocent babies and suffering people are destined to die - this is a deadlock which is becoming more and more dangerous today, with plans already announced to legalize artificial impregnation and manipulations with embryos."
